A Sweet Meet at the Dessert Museum

Got a sweet tooth? For the month of February, our comm organized a meet at the newly-opened Dessert Museum at the Conrad S Maison in Pasay. What started as ‘hey they have a giant plastic gummy bear’ snowballed into one of our biggest meets yet, thanks to the dedication of our event organizer Kristina.

Anyone who’s spent two minutes talking with me, knows that Sweet is my kryptonite. It is one of the styles that really, truly stumps me. I was about to reply to the announcement post with ‘but I have nothing to wear!’ before I remembered another of my Impossible Children – the Seiko Matsuda kids’ furisode from last year. Tips before you go:

  • The Dessert Museum does not have its own restrooms, and there is no baggage counter available. Go to the restrooms on the 2nd floor of the building, they’re roomy and well-lit in case you want to change clothes.
  • Remember that you are paying for a very tight time slot. Do not be late. Go to the restroom and do all your business beforehand. The facility will not refund you for missed minutes.
  • You only have a few minutes in each room, so think and act quickly. It won’t hurt to look through photos to get some idea of how to pose, and if there is no designated photographer in your party, a selfie stick will be very useful.

We paid in advance for our slots, so after confirming our registration at the front desk we made our way quickly to the next area, which is the donut room. The doorway into this room is an absolutely massive donut. There are stairs leading down into the room, and a slide: but that is something you do not mess with when you’re wearing several layers and mega-poof.

Despite how delicious they look, the donuts are made of wood. Do be careful not to accidentally walk into one!

The next room features marshmallows. You squeeze through a narrow opening between two columns of mallows – or you could use the perfectly normal door beside it. The walls are covered in marshmallows, and there is a forest of it hanging from the ceiling.


The effect is like that of falling snow, suspended in time. Just be careful as you push your way through! Several caught in my hair, and I had to spend a few seconds trying to untangle it.


I picked up my first dessert here, a fluffy marshmallow on a stick. You have a choice between strawberry or chocolate dip.


From the marshmallow room, you have two doors: naughty or nice? I picked the door on the right.

Spoiler: they both lead into the same room, which is themed around candy. Depending on the door you choose, you will end up in either the pink or blue pathway. The road is bordered with giant sticks of peppermint. At this point the group dispersed, hunting for a corner to shoot in. This space is one of the larger exhibits in the Dessert Museum, featuring the peppermint road, a see-saw and swing, gum balls, and heart-shaped chocolate boxes.

I chose the spot with the gumballs, as all the bright colors seemed to suit the print on my furisode.

This spot was just so cute with the huge bottle props, that I had to do this:


The next room features ice cream. There are massive clusters of balloons, reaching from floor to ceiling. There’s also a faux hot air balloon basket, tilted forward at an angle, and a large mural of ice-cream on the wall.


Despite this being the ice cream room, it was rather warm. From what I hear, they used to have a soft-serve machine here, but had to take it out because of the heat. Maybe it’s from the lights used to illuminate the balloons?


Note: be careful with the hot-air balloon basket. It’s set at a 45 degree angle, and rather low: like the mural on the wall, this basket was probably designed with small children in mind. Adults will have to kneel to achieve the proper position, but the area was rather dirty. I compromised by squatting, clinging precariously to the edge of the basket to keep from pitching over. It was very awkward, but looked alright in the picture.

I scanned my bracelet again here, to get some ice cream. The avocado flavor is the most popular, and it was quite good! Make sure to finish your ice cream- the next area is a blast.

By that, I mean a literal blast of air. It’s the gum ball room! Six people at a time can enter the wind machine filled with balloons. Taking pictures inside is all but impossible, so I handed my phone off to Camille. I strongly suggest to secure everything on your person. Pin everything down!

I didn’t, and they captured a hilarious moment where the big fabric flower on my head flew off in the wind. OAO (video link in comments, as it seems I just can’t embed video here)

Moving on, the gummy bear room has hundreds of (fake) gummy bears everywhere: stuck to the walls, suspended in the air like balloons, and toward the back, massive king-size bears all in a row, big enough to hug.

We immediately swarmed around one of these. We also had some fun with the tubs filled with jellybeans, and trampolines here and there. WARNING: do not jump if you are wearing wedges, and do not use the trampolines at all if you are wearing heels. Be sensible. The most you can do is bounce lightly.

Next up is the forest of cotton candy. If the other rooms featured a cacophony of color, this room is PINK! PINK! PINK!


I felt that this room had more of a fantastic feel to it. It is easy to imagine a story behind the display; you walk under a canopy of pink fluff, then you come across spindly trees festooned with cotton candy, and a great teacup big enough to hide in.


The road eventually leads you to a tree-house bursting with pink poof, the ladder just a tiny bit out of reach… and a cart manned by one of the Museum staff, serving real edible cotton candy. I scanned my bracelet for the third and last time here.

I look like I stuck a massive wad of cotton candy on my head here. No, that’s just a fabric flower; but the color matching was a fun coincidence.

The next room is also the last – the cake room. We met up with the other half of our group here, and there was such chaos with everyone jockeying for a good spot for the group photo. I had the idea of using my cotton candy as a prop, and took a moment to sit quietly in a corner, plucking it into shape.

After sanitizing my hands, of course.


It’s a cat! I had a brief mock-battle with Monique, who wielded twin blades- er, mallows.

Aside from our yearly community anniversary, this is one of the largest meets we’ve ever had. With such a large group, it was good foresight on Kristina’s part to block off the time for just people from the community, so we could make full use of the limited time to focus on our own shots. Luigi also did a marvelous job, getting shots of our half of the group within the time limit.


Walking to and from the venue, we were constantly approached for photos, and let’s be honest: some people just won’t take no for an answer, no matter how you explain that you are there as a visitor. My advice is always to stick together, and comport yourself with dignity. No matter how you are dressed, treat others with respect. If they don’t reciprocate, you don’t have to force yourself to put up with them.

Walk away, and stay positive.
